For operators weighing the timing and scale of investment in public fast-charging infrastructure, the data now available from U.S. government sources and independent research bodies makes a clear case: demand is already ahead of supply, and the trajectory through 2030 makes that position more acute, not less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-u-s-supply-demand-gap\">The U.S. supply-demand gap<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most current data available puts the number of EVs in the US at 6,065,363 vehicles as of April 2026, per&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coxautoinc.com\/market-insights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cox Automotive<\/a>, which tracks registrations using Experian automotive data. Against 81,125 publicly accessible DC fast-charging ports recorded by the U.S. Department of Energy as of July 8, 2026, that places the current ratio at approximately 75 BEVs per public DC fast charging port. To understand what that means in practice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>6,065,363 EVs<\/strong>&nbsp;on U.S. roads as of April 2026 \u2014 battery-electric vehicles only, with no combustion engine or alternative fuel source, entirely dependent on charging infrastructure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>81,125 publicly accessible DC fast charging ports<\/strong>&nbsp;at the end of Q2 2026, per the U.S. Department of Energy&#8217;s Alternative Fuels Data Center.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>~75 EVs per public DC fast charging port<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 the resulting ratio as of mid-2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosinnovate.org\/posts\/press-release\/2025-q4-get-connected-press-release\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alliance for Automotive Innovation&#8217;s Get Connected Q4 2025 report<\/a>&nbsp;notes <strong>that more than 129,000 additional DC fast-charging ports are required<\/strong> above current projections to meet the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/driveelectric.gov\/files\/2030-charging-network.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Renewable Energy Laboratory&#8217;s 2030 National Charging Network targets<\/a>. Across all charger types, <strong>498 new ports would need to be installed every day from now through the end of 2030 to close that gap<\/strong>. The U.S. is not currently on that trajectory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>With approximately 75 EVs per public DCFC port today and more than 129,000 additional fast chargers still needed by 2030, the U.S. fast-charging network is structurally behind demand \u2014 and the gap is not closing at the required pace.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coverage is a compounding factor.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-ev-outlook-2025\/electric-vehicle-charging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The IEA&#8217;s Global EV Outlook 2025<\/a>&nbsp;found that only 35% of U.S. interstate highways have a fast charger within every 30 miles, compared to more than 75% of the European highway network. Within the U.S., coverage varies significantly: the Pacific region reaches 70%, while central states fall to between 20% and 30%. Notably, even the most advanced EV markets continue to operate with meaningful fast-charger supply constraints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norway is instructive precisely because it is the world&#8217;s most advanced BEV market.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2026\/01\/20\/nearly-1200-new-fast-charging-points-in-norway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to Electrive and the Norwegian EV Association<\/a>, 95.9% of new car sales in 2025 were battery-electric, and Norway&#8217;s national fast-charging network reached 10,670 points after nearly 1,200 additions in 2025. Yet the EV-to-fast-charger ratio remains approximately 85. This indicates that even sustained, policy-driven infrastructure investment struggles to keep pace once BEV adoption reaches mass scale. <strong>For the United States, where BEV penetration of the total vehicle fleet remains below 2%, the implication is that demand pressure will intensify substantially as adoption broadens.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Germany&#8217;s position reinforces this point. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vda.de\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2025\/251104_PM_VDA_E-Charging_Network_Ranking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VDA E-Charging Network Ranking<\/a>\u00a0puts Germany&#8217;s fast-charger ratio at approximately 71 BEVs per stall, while noting that the rate of new fast-charging deployment slowed in the most recent year reviewed. The VDA has described this deceleration as a concern, identifying <strong>expanded infrastructure investment as among Germany&#8217;s most pressing infrastructure priorities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-commercial-vehicle-fast-charging-follows-the-same-pattern\"><strong>Commercial<\/strong> <strong>vehicle fast charging follows the same pattern<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even in Norway, the national total of public DC fast chargers for electric trucks stood at just 254 as of early 2026, following the addition of 57 units in 2025 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2026\/01\/20\/nearly-1200-new-fast-charging-points-in-norway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Electrive, January 2026<\/a>). For commercial fleets that cannot rely on depot charging, public fast-charging infrastructure is an operational necessity. Research from Harvard Business School&#8217;s\u00a0Omar Asensio and colleagues\u00a0found that U.S. public charging stations carry an average reliability score of 78%, indicating that approximately one in five chargers is non-functional or unable to complete a session at any given time. At that rate, the effective supply of available fast charging is materially lower than reported port counts suggest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poor reliability has measurable commercial consequences. BEV drivers who encounter non-functional chargers form routing patterns quickly around networks that consistently deliver. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-ev-outlook-2025\/electric-vehicle-charging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IEA&#8217;s Global EV Outlook 2025<\/a>\u00a0identifies uptime and charging capacity per vehicle \u2014 alongside coverage density \u2014 as the primary indicators of a network&#8217;s ability to support growing BEV adoption. The operational challenge for these operators is not generating demand. It is ensuring that infrastructure performs reliably enough, and at sufficient scale, to capture it consistently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kempower&#8217;s presence in North America reflects a view that this market requires infrastructure designed to perform under sustained utilization pressure.
