Finland’s largest retail cooperative S Group scales up EV charging network in Helsinki metropolitan area – new Kempower DC charging points opened in Helsinki & Espoo

According to a recent survey by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom and Statistics Finland, the city of Espoo ranks 4th in the density of electric cars in Finland. There are almost 500 electric cars per 100,000 inhabitants in Espoo. The top position is held by the city of Kauniainen, where the density is nearly 700 electric cars per 100,000 inhabitants. The population of the two cities differs from each other so that in absolute numbers, Espoo leads the density of electric cars with 1443-71.

The southern part of Finland, Uusimaa, already has more than half of Finland’s EV car fleet. S Group’s largest regional cooperative store, HOK Elanto, will establish 222 electric passenger car charging points this year. New charging points will be built in connection with Prisma outlets and S-markets in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kerava, Järvenpää, Hyvinkää, Tuusula, Mäntsälä and Nurmijärvi. The electricity at the EV charging points is mainly renewable wind power produced by S Group.

The expansion  of HOK-Elanto’s charging point network is part of an S Group-level project. The aim is to build a nationwide electric car charging network connected with ABC charging points, supermarkets and hotels in the next few years. Kempower is the charging system supplier. The latest Kempower S-Series charging stations are in Espoo, at S-Group’s Prisma Olari supermarket and in Helsinki, at Prisma Viikki supermarket.

In the first phase, HOK Elanto offers EV drivers the opportunity to charge their electric cars for free, as user experiences are sought from the Kempower S-series charging system. Charging will become chargeable later in 2021. Payment is made with the ABC mobile application.

– Until now, all our Prisma supermarkets have offered the possibility to charge hybrid and electric cars. The number of electric cars is growing and the importance of charging points in customers’ everyday life is becoming increasingly important – that is why we are expanding the charging network and building new charging points to our outlets and stores. Of course, we also want to support the development towards low-carbon mobility, says Hannu Houni, Head of HOK Elanto ABC Chain.
