Germany’s billion-euro program for electric truck charging infrastructure*

Germany’s billion-euro program for electric truck charging infrastructure: Kempower is driving the next era of heavy-duty charging

Germany is launching one of Europe’s largest infrastructure initiatives for electrified freight transport through a multi-billion-euro funding program from 2026 to 2029. The Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) is providing up to 1 billion euros to significantly accelerate the expansion of high-performance charging infrastructure for battery-electric heavy-duty vehicles. The focus is on depot and public charging hubs, grid connections, battery storage, and intelligent load management systems.

The new funding landscape marks a decisive turning point: charging infrastructure for electric heavy‑duty vehicles is no longer treated as a series of isolated projects, but as the strategic backbone of tomorrow’s logistics system. Initial applications under the program can be submitted starting 26 May 2026, with SMEs gaining simplified access for depotcharging solutions from 5 June 2026. The funding guideline remains in force through 2029, with additional application windows planned over the coming years to support the nationwide rollout of high‑performance truck‑charging infrastructure.

In this context, Kempower is positioning itself as one of the most influential technology providers in the field of DC fast charging for commercial vehicles. The Finnish company is bringing a new generation of modular, scalable charging systems to market, specifically developed for highly dynamic fleet and depot environments.

Instead of rigid infrastructure, Kempower relies on distributed power electronics, intelligent power distribution, and highly flexible load management. This creates charging depots that can adapt in real time to grid capacities, fleet demand, and site conditions—a decisive factor in a logistics environment that prioritizes efficiency per installed charging capacity.

At the same time, Kempower has been at the forefront of developing the Megawatt Charging System (MCS, and has delivered several MCS sites to date. Kempower is thereby laying the technological foundation for ultra-fast charging in Llong-haul transport. The next generation of electric heavy-duty logistics is thus moving closer to real-world implementation.

The webinar “How E-Truck Charging Really Works – Solutions from Real Projects” (in German language) on 3 June, 2026, demonstrates how these technologies function in practical operation, presenting real-world implementations, charging architectures, and operational models from actual projects:  The BMV’s funding program provides the policy framework for accelerating the scaling of these technologies and specifically addresses the ramp-up of zero-emission heavy-duty mobility in Germany.  And be welcome to meet Kempower live at Power2Drive from 23 to 25 June 2026 in Munich!
