Kempower launches higher-powered Control Unit for fleet charging, keeping heavy-duty vehicles on the road longer

  • The Kempower Control Unit V2 can deliver a meaningful charge session during scheduled truck loading stops, which typically last between 1 to 2 hours, as well as overnight charging for buses
  • The versatile Control Unit is commonly used for overhead charging setups, helping fleets to save valuable ground space for truck parking and loading
  • With the ability to charge more quickly during loading, the Control Unit V2 has been designed to help fleet operators maximize profitability and operational efficiency

The DC fast charging manufacturer, Kempower, is launching a next-generation 400 kW version of the Control Unit, its versatile charging dispenser designed for complex charging setups. While the Control Unit V2 is compatible with all CCS electric vehicles, including buses and passenger cars, a key use-case for the new solution is warehouse-based charging for electric truck fleets during short loading windows.

Compact and robust, the Kempower Control Unit is commonly used as part of the Kempower Cable Arm solution as an overhead gantry charging solution for truck loading bays in place of a typical in-ground satellite charging setup. By installing charging in the loading bays rather than in a separate, dedicated area of the warehouse, no additional downtime or space is required.

The Control Unit V2 can deliver up to 400 kW of distributed charging power, 160 kW more than the Control Unit V1 solution, meaning that e-trucks can be substantially recharged within the loading window itself. Quicker charging means trucks can be ready to return to the road as soon as loading is complete, with no separate charging stop needed, so fleet operators can continue to be profitable, even while electrifying.

The overhead solution means cables come down from above while Kempower Power Unit can be installed up to 80 meters away from each dispenser, so warehouses don’t need to be reconfigured nor valuable truck parking space reduced to incorporate charging infrastructure. A simpler installation procedure through ceiling space rather than underground can also make the Control Unit a lower-cost overhead option for fleets in many cases.

The Control Unit V2 is also well-suited to longer charging sessions for both trucks and buses, for example overnight at bus depots. It can be used in a number of other settings for bespoke fleet charging configurations, including on walls, bollards and underground. It comes with a simplified and robust design suited to harsher environments, like high-traffic, heavy-duty depots and commercial sites.

In commercial charging, charging time is downtime. As more fleets electrify, operators are asking less about whether electric trucks can do the job and more about how many hours charging costs them. We expect the setups that win out will be the ones fleets barely notice, because they fit into time that’s already in the schedule. The Control Unit V2 is a step in that direction.” Jussi Vanhanen, Chief Product Officer, Kempower

The Kempower Control Unit V2 is available for immediate orders in all Kempower markets except North America.
