Kempower boosts the electrification of heavy-duty vehicles by launching liquid-cooled satellite charger

Leading rapid EV charging technology provider Kempower has launched a new version of its Kempower Satellite system featuring liquid-cooled charging. Capable of delivering 400kW of continuous charging power, the liquid-cooled charging satellite is ideal for heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks that require higher charging power than personal electric vehicles.

The decarbonization of the heavy-duty transport sector is crucial if the world is to achieve its net-zero aspirations. Trucks, buses and coaches are currently responsible for around 25% of CO2 emissions from road transport in the European Union and approximately 6% of the region’s total emissions. In the United States, medium and heavy-duty trucks account for about 29% of road transport’s total emissions – and approximately 7% of the country’s total – despite being less than 5% of the total vehicles on the road. Moreover, while the pace of electrifying heavy-duty vehicles is increasing, emissions are continuing to rise, primarily due to the growing amount of freight traffic on roads.

The new charger model looks similar to Kempower’s existing Satellite system, with the liquid-cooled cables replacing the traditional air-cooled cables. It also features the same user interface and experience as the company’s current satellite charger, which has received positive feedback from drivers for being intuitive and simple to use.

Providing 400kW of continuous power means that the liquid-cooled satellite charger will enable vehicles to be charged more quickly by delivering higher power. This improvement will help overcome one of the last remaining barriers to the electrification of heavy-duty transport.

We drew upon the Kemppi Group’s 70 years of welding heritage and expertise in cooling welding cables during the development of this product, guaranteeing high levels of safety and quality. Our customers can install liquid and air-cooled fast charging satellites in separate charging systems or combine both products into the same system, optimizing investment costs while dynamically allocating unused power to different charging satellites. Our technology also makes it possible to prioritize the liquid-cooled charging satellites to always receive full power, dynamically redistributing power when other satellites are being used.

We believe that electric will be the winning technology for heavy-duty vehicles in the long run. This product launch is the latest example of how we’re supporting its development.

Tomi Ristimäki, Kempower’s CEO

Kempower will showcase the Kempower liquid-cooled satellite system at EVS35, the world’s largest EV event, between June 11th-15th in Oslo, Norway. The product will subsequently be available globally, with deliveries expected to begin in the third quarter of 2022.
