Bus electrification in the UK: Why the time is now to invest in electric bus fleets
All signs are pointing towards an electrified UK bus industry. Regulations ending the sale of new non-zero emission buses as early as 2030, paired with electric buses’ increasing cost parity with diesel counterparts, are encouraging operators to invest in electric bus fleets now.
The UK is now Europe’s biggest zero-emission bus market and it’s continuing to grow. When 2,523 new zero-emission buses were registered in the UK in 2025, it marked a 62.2% increase from the previous year.
While introducing an electric fleet is one part of the transition, the charging set-up is an equally important decision. Operators expect efficiency, reliability and smooth operation from the charging infrastructure they install at their depot.
For those considering taking the next step in their bus electrification journey and introducing electric bus charging to their depots, this blog post explains how Kempower chargers have been proven to meet the needs of operators.
Easy installation and seamless day-to-day operations
Kempower has dedicated local teams that work closely with operators to help design their depot charging sites. Tailored designs adapt to the existing layout of bus depots to conserve space and accommodate the traffic flow of the site. Above ground cable options help to minimise cost and disruption during the installation phase of the project.
The Kempower charging set up for buses is typically made up of a Kempower Power Unit – the power centre – and multiple Kempower Satellites or Kempower Control Units – the connectors. The Kempower Power Unit, which is the central power converter of the hardware solution, can be placed up to 80 metres away from the connectors. Meanwhile, the Kempower Satellites have one of the lowest footprints on the market, at around the size of an A4 piece of paper. The Kempower Control Units are even smaller and are typically mounted on an overhead gantry or on the wall of the bus depot. This means our teams can design a space-saving charging set up that works for even the most crowded sites.
Other charger options include Kempower Pantograph chargers, which reduce vehicle downtime thanks to a high-powered pantograph arm that connects with a roof-mounted contact rail on the vehicle. Our Kempower Station Charger is an all-in-one DC fast-charging solution that also provides the option to dynamically distribute power across up to four connectors.
Our Kempower teams will work in collaboration with the depot to come up with the best charging set-up for your depot needs.
Reliable charging infrastructure that supports regular bus operations
Reliability is a central component of Kempower charger design. We understand the importance of guaranteeing smooth day-to-day operations to a business, which is why our chargers uphold an average >99% uptime.
Our Kempower Satellites and Kempower Liquid-Cooled Satellites are extremely versatile charging solutions that adapt to the charging scenario. These chargers can either fully charge a bus overnight ready for a full day of driving, or within the space of ~45 minutes when dwell times are short. Whatever an operator’s charging scenario that day, Kempower chargers deliver a reliable and flexible service.
How can we guarantee such high reliability? Part of the secret of Kempower’s >99% average uptime is down to its modular design, which increases redundancy. Our rack-style Kempower Power Units hold up to 1.2MW in 25 kW granularity. The incremental power storage means that if one module fails, the rest of the system functions normally.
24/7 remote monitoring via ChargEye, Kempower’s cloud-based management platform, adds another layer of security. In the event of a fault, this is flagged immediately through a notification system. Usually, the fault can then be fixed remotely, immediately. Otherwise, maintenance teams are alerted to the problem and can respond quickly in-person.
ChargeEye’s scheduling feature also lets bus operators ensure that vehicles are fully charged and ready to go at the right time. Connectors can also be programmed to precondition the buses each morning, ensuring buses’ batteries are replenished with energy from the grid before departing. These features help operators avoid penalties and downtimes by having the right vehicle prioritised, charged, preconditioned, and ready to depart on time.
A cost-efficient charging solution
Investing in electrification today means investing in a set-up that is only going to get cheaper in the long term. Against a backdrop of ever-uncertain fuel prices and government legislation increasingly incentivising e-mobility, preparing for an electric future is a smart investment.
Through Kempower’s dynamic power distribution model, bus operators can maintain a smaller grid connection by using available power more intelligently. For example, buses that arrive at a depot first can benefit from ultra-rapid charging, meaning the amount of energy that needs to be delivered to the rest of the fleet overnight is then reduced, lowering the overall power requirement for the site.
Intelligent power management also enables bus operators to reduce charge levels during periods of peak energy prices, reducing the cost of recharging their vehicles and increasing their profits.
Once installed, our ChargEye software makes running the site as seamless as possible, saving depots up to 60% in operational costs. Features such as power management and energy price optimisation keep efficiency high and costs low, helping bus operators meet their critical route schedules whilst cutting costs and delivering the best value to their customers. Our ISO27001 certified and GDPR-compliant ChargEye software is designed and developed in Finland and stores all data in the EU.
As well as the opportunity for cost savings, many bus operators are opening up their networks to third parties to generate a new revenue stream for their business. The Kempower solution is tailor-made for providing secure and hassle free third party access, facilitated via ChargEye.
Join other UK bus operators leading the e-bus transition
Kempower has already supported many bus companies in their transition to electrification. Over the course of three years, we have collaborated with our key UK partners to deploy >350 ultra-rapid charging connectors across multiple bus depots, working with bus operators like Metroline, Go Ahead and Stagecoach.
Now is the time to invest in electrified buses
