Megawatt Charging System (MCS) is a new charging standard built for heavy-duty electric vehicles, delivering up to 1.2 MW of power.
How it works, in plain terms
MCS is built around a dedicated high-current connector and charging architecture designed to move far more power than standard EV charging equipment. A typical high-power CCS charger designed for heavy-duty vehicles can deliver around 560 kW of power. Megawatt Chargers can almost double that figure. For example, Kempower’s Mega Satellite reaches up to 1.2 MW (1,200 kW) at up to 1,500 amps, which cuts a heavy-duty truck’s charging time down significantly. With Kempower’s charging system, that power doesn’t have to come from one oversized cabinet per charging point, either: Kempower’s Power Unit distributes power dynamically across multiple Satellites on the same site, so a depot or highway hub can run MCS and high-power CCS charging side by side and shift power to whichever vehicle needs it most at a given moment.

Why fleets and transportation industry care about this right now?
- Less time parked, more time driving. A heavy-duty vehicle that charges with a megawatt charger gets back on the road faster.
- Better use of every charging bay. Fewer heavy-duty vehicles sitting at a charging plug means more vehicles can use the same site in a day, increasing the charging site utilization.
- No need to guess and rebuild later. Kempower’s charging systems are built so a site can add more power over time rather than tearing out and replacing equipment as trucks get bigger batteries.
Is the MCS charging standard going to become the industry standard?
Most electric heavy-duty vehicles still use the older, CCS standard charging plug as MCS equipped trucks are just starting to arrive. That’s why Kempower built the Mega Satellite Flex to support both types of charging in one unit, so a site owner doesn’t have to bet on which kind of truck will show up. Megawatt Chargers like the Kempower Mega Satellite Flex further increase charging site utilization, ultimately lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO).
FAQ
What does MCS stand for? MCS stands for Megawatt Charging System — the new charging standard built specifically for heavy-duty electric vehicles, offered by Kempower through its Mega Satellite charger.
Do I need to replace my whole charging setup to add MCS? No. Kempower’s charging systems are built to grow — a site can add more charging power over time instead of replacing existing equipment.
