Kempower and the City of Lahti sign a growth agreement to address the needs of Kempower’s long-term growth

(Lahti, Finland, 22 August 2023) Kempower, the City of Lahti and Lahti Region Development LADEC have signed a joint growth agreement in Finland. The agreement aims to address and anticipate Kempower’s long-term needs for rapid growth and to ensure the timing and scale of the solutions provided by the City of Lahti.

“Lahti is proudly Kempower’s hometown. We want to ensure that Kempower’s growth in Lahti continues. Lahti has quickly become a growth center for electric transport in Finland and Kempower is the driving force behind this development,”

says Lahti Mayor Pekka Timonen

“Rapid growth requires a lot from both the company and the city. With this agreement, we aim to ensure that the conditions for growth in Lahti are better than anywhere else,” Timonen continues.

In the agreement, Kempower commits to evaluate the City of Lahti and the Lahti region as one option when planning future growth investments. The city will improve accessibility to Kempower’s offices through public transport and traffic management. Furthermore, the city will promote the availability of skilled workforce and facilitate relocation to Lahti. The City of Lahti will also develop a charging strategy for public spaces and electric transport within the city in cooperation with Kempower.

The cooperation agreement also covers collaboration with educational institutions in the Lahti region and LUT University.  Kempower and LUT University will open a new e-mobility research center on the Lahti campus in 2023, with the aim of strengthening multidisciplinary e-mobility research and developing education to meet the future needs of the industry.

“Kempower has its roots in Lahti. In a short time, we have successfully built production, supply chain, as well as research and development operations in the Lahti region.  Most importantly, we have managed to recruit skilled people from the Lahti region to Kempower. An important part of the cooperation agreement is therefore to support our future recruitments in Lahti and to make Kempowerians’ daily life smoother,” says Tomi Ristimäki, Kempower’s CEO.

Kempower will gradually open a new production facility in Lahti in 2024. In addition to production space, the new facilities will include product development and office space, among other operations. The expansion will double Kempower’s production facilities in Lahti and is the first part of the company’s capacity expansion in Europe during 2024-2025. Kempower is still considering the possible need for additional capacity in Europe.
