Kempower bolsters regional EV charging infrastructure with its first charging location in Wallonia, Belgium
- Kempower partners with mobility infrastructure firm TSG to launch new charging site
- Up to eight EVs can be charged at one time which aims to relieve soaring local demand for fast charging
- New ChargePay system designed by TSG offers quick, easy and transparent payment option for customers in line with new regulations
Belgium – Finnish fast charging manufacturer Kempower has joined forces with mobility infrastructure specialist TSG to provide essential EV charging facilities in Wallonia, Belgium.
Two Kempower Power Units have been installed at Station Interzonings, located near the Battice Interchange, equipped with four Kempower single charging satellites per unit. Each satellite comprises a CCS2 plug, providing DC charging for up to eight EVs at one time. The Kempower Power Units provide up to 600kW each, while each charger can deliver up to 400kW each, meaning that a typical electric car can top up its battery by 50% in less than half an hour while drivers take a break at the station’s facilities.
Kempower chargers are pioneers in dynamic power distribution as they allow the total available power to be shared based on the real-time charging needs of each connected vehicle. This power can be adjusted in small increments of 25kW, making the chargers agile to regular changes in vehicle requirements. Unlike an equal split of power, which results in slower charging when some terminals are not in use, this technology optimizes charging speed and seeks to address common concerns around charger availability and queue times as charging infrastructure strives to keep up with the increasing number of EVs.
The new development seeks to address the demand for EV charging across Wallonia, which has risen as a result of increased EV uptake by businesses and industry. Station Interzonings is strategically located to service the region’s various industrial zones and support the energy transition by boosting accessibility to essential charging provisions.
The Kempower facility was installed by TSG, a leader in the design, supply, implementation and maintenance of sustainable mobility solutions across Europe. The firm is also a specialist in payment systems and has supplied the charging station with two ChargePay terminals, TSG’s new on-screen payment solution which allows customers to easily manage their spend, monitor the charging progress from their mobile phone and pay for their session by card.
New Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) rules brought in earlier this year by the European Union require DC charging points above 50kW to accept payment by card without the need for customer registration. The ChargePay machines look to offer a pioneering solution to addressing the new legislation, with the payment terminals at Station Interzonings being among the first to be deployed in Belgium.
Han Dix, Kempower’s Head of Sales for the Benelux region, said: “We’re proud to introduce our charging technology to Wallonia and play a part in the electrification of mobility in this new location. We understood that the availability of fast charging in Wallonia was lacking in comparison with the demand for EVs, so we worked closely with TSG to ensure that our first charging station in the region would offer as much value as possible to both Station Interzonings and its customers.”
He continued: “With eight new charging points and the new ChargePay system provided by TSG, we’re confident that the project has had and will continue to have a positive impact on the area and the EV drivers who travel through the interchange.”
Kris Dierckx, TSG’s EV Sales Manager for Belgium, added: “We are pleased to have launched Station Interzonings’ EV charging facility supplied with Kempower’s quality fast chargers. Kempower aligns with our principles of service, value and high standards and we were impressed with its innovative enhancements to EV charging technology, such as the dynamic power balancing function which significantly improves charger availability for drivers.
He added: “We would like to express our gratitude to Alain Schoonbroodt, owner of Station Interzonings, who helped to make the project happen. We hope that our partnership with Kempower will continue to drive the expansion of EV charging provisions both in Wallonia and beyond.”
With electric trucks emerging as a growing e-mobility trend in Belgium and more widely across Europe, it’s expected that the project could later expand into the logistics and transportation market and address the need for fast truck charging in the region. Emissions from trucks, buses and coaches currently make up roughly a quarter of the EU’s road transportation carbon emissions, although a forecasted surge in electric logistics vehicle production in the coming decade is hoped to curb the impact.
