Electric Marine & Electric Boats: Kempower joins the EU program to electrify the Island of Arousa
Kempower is proud to be part of the European Union’s Energy for EU Islands projects, aiming to turn the island of Arousa (Illa de Arousa) fully electric. Kempower’s role is to offer fast charging solutions for electric vessels and vehicles on the island. The island of Arousa has an island fleet of 100 fishing vessels and has planned to introduce electric bus lines for the high number of tourists visiting the island every year. The project is already underway with electrification of the first vessel. This first sample will serve as an example of the economic and environmental potential of replacing diesel with electricity and renewable energy.
In the first phase of the project, Kempower offers fast charging solutions for fishing vessels and the first electric bus routes. However, Kempower’s versatile charging solution is a perfect fit for smaller vehicles as well. In later phases of the project, it can also power electric cars and other electric commercial vehicles.
We are proud to be able to take part in this important project, driving renewable energy development and energy independence among European island communities.
These projects are a perfect match with Kempower’s vision. We believe electricity is the future in commercial and public fleets, whether it’s marine, public transport, off-highway machinery or passenger cars.

Weatherproof charging stations for outdoor use
Kempower T-Series is a truly weatherproof and robust fast charging device. The unit is movable and very fast to set up in harbours. Thanks to its flexibility, the T-Series fits perfectly for the project starting phase for piloting the first electric vessels and buses. The final charging solution will utilise Kempower’s modular charging satellite system that matches even better the versatile charging needs of a large number of different kinds of land and sea vehicles.”
The project on the island of Arousa is part of the EU program aiming to encourage the energy transformation of 25 islands located in Europe. The concrete actions on the Galician island of Arousa (Pontevedra) are divided into three focus areas that will reduce or directly eliminate the use of fossil fuels.
These three actions will focus on
- Energy efficiency, with the replacement of diesel boilers by heat pumps
- The change from conventional lighting to LED lights
- The electrification of the marine sector, especially fishing boats
All these actions will be supported with the commitment to renewable electricity generation, both wind and through photovoltaic systems.
In this project, Kempower collaborates with SGI, an engineering company with headquarters in Zaragoza (Spain). Kempower’s CEO Tomi Ristimäki is delighted by the enthusiasm of all the parties involved in the project:
The first meeting was held last week in good spirits to present and evaluate the project. All parties – marine sector, shipyards, technicians, politicians and business partners – are very committed to driving forward the transition to clean energies.
