Kempower and JET Charge to provide charging infrastructure for Australia’s largest electric vehicle logistics fleet

Team Global Express will deploy 60 new battery-electric delivery vehicles in its Western Sydney depot as part of Australia’s biggest-ever electric truck trial. Kempower and JET Charge will deliver the charging infrastructure for Team Global Express’ depot, including 16 Kempower rapid chargers and 47 of JET Charge’s Australian Made AC charger. The Depot of the Future project, co-funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, aims to cut emissions in the trucking sector and help Australia reach its goal of reducing emissions to 43% below 2005 levels by 2030. This Project received funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) as part of the Driving the Nation Fund.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – Kempower is teaming up with JET Charge, Australia’s largest EV charging infrastructure specialist, to deliver the charging infrastructure for Australia’s largest electric truck trial. The Depot of the Future project, led by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency and Team Global Express, aims to revolutionize the Australian trucking sector by demonstrating that an electrified fleet is possible on a large scale.

In 2022, Australia set a new emissions reduction target of 43% below 2005 levels by 2030. However, with emissions from light commercial vehicles, trucks and buses currently accounting for around 7% of the country’s total annual greenhouse gas emissions, it urgently needs to clean up its trucking industry to hit this target.

The Depot of the Future project, led by Australian freight giant Team Global Express and co-funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, will bring Australia closer to reaching its emissions targets by introducing 60 new electric trucks to its roads. After securing AU$20 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, Team Global Express made the biggest-ever order for electric trucks in Australia, which are set to hit the road in 2023. The 60 new battery-electric delivery vehicles will be stationed at Team Global Express’ Bungarribee parcel depot in Western Sydney.

Kempower and JET Charge continued their productive partnership in the Australian market to provide the necessary charging infrastructure to power these 60 new electric trucks. The two companies will manage the development of the charging systems at the Bungarribee depot. Team Global Express will install 63 chargers at its depot, 16 of which will be Kempower’s 120kW fast chargers. The remaining 47 will be JET Charge’s 22kW AC chargers.

Commenting on the project, Tomi Ristimäki, CEO of Kempower, said:

“Having already teamed up with JET Charge on Australia’s longest EV highway in Western Australia, we’re excited to introduce more of the country to the power of e-mobility in Australia’s most ambitious EV trial yet. The robust design, dynamic load balancing and high voltage of our chargers make them ideal for this pioneering project.”

Tim Washington, CEO of JET Charge, added:

“We started JET Charge almost a decade ago to accelerate the transition to low-emission vehicles in Australia by breaking down the barriers to EV charging, so being chosen to support one of the biggest electric truck trials in the world here in Australia is a real privilege. We’re also excited to work with Kempower again as their primary Australian distributor, as they’ve proven to be a reliable partner. I’m confident our joint expertise will ensure this project’s success and help prove that a fully electrified trucking industry is possible.”

Time Washington, CEO of JET Charge
